On this date in 1972, HBO launched it's programming broadcasting the 1971 movie "Sometimes a Great Notion" starring Paul Newman and Henry Fonda. The movie was based on a novel by Ken Kesey. Kesey may be better known for his 1962 novel, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". However "Sometimes a Great Notion" is considered his masterpiece. It was published in 1964.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) was one of only three films to win the five major academy awards. It Happened One Night (1934), and The Silence of the Lambs (1991) were the other two.
