Boardwalk Fries - Wednesday, June 10, 2015

Way way back, a very long time ago, during the presidency of Jimmy Carter, two brothers were waxing nostalgic, revisiting the famous boardwalk in Ocean City, Maryland that they used to go to in summers.  They rode the rides, and they ate the french fries.  Their names were Dave and Fran DiFerdinando and the year was 1980.  They got an idea - they decided they wanted to share those wonderful french fries with people all over the place.  And that's what they did.

The next year, they opened their first Boardwalk Fries in the White Marsh Mall, in White Marsh, Maryland.  Their fries were cooked with a special recipe, lightly salted and served piping hot. They did so well that, in six short years, they were in malls coast to coast.  And then, their customers demanded more.  So they added hamburgers and shakes.  And they created overseas franchises.  Their most recent international announcement was for Baghdad, Iraq.  Keep on keeping on, Dave and Fran!  We are happy to display their illuminated sign in our Toy Box, here at the American Treasure Tour.

STRIKE!!!!!  On this day in 1944, Joe Nuxhall pitched his first major league baseball game for the Cincinnati Reds.  While normally that may not make news, what makes Joe's start pretty special was that he had not yet turned sixteen years old.  World War II caused a shortage in good players, and he was able to fill the void after getting permission from his high school principal.  The game was lost to the St. Louis Cardinals, but Nuxhall made history.  He moved on to the Minor League, before returning to the Majors as a young adult.  Go Joe!

CAN YOU BELIEVE... That Gina Gershon is turning 53 today!?  The established actor has starred in many fine productions, her first in a music video for The Cars' song "Hello Again," but it was up from there - 1988's Cocktail with Elizabeth Shue and Tom Cruise, Bound from 1996, and notoriously in the prior year's Showgirls.  Gershon acts, writes, plays music, she is quite simply awesome.
