QUESTION: Bing Crosby was married twice. Dixie Lee was his first wife; who was his second?
A) Kathryn Grant
B) Billie Dove
C) Lillian Gish
D) Charlize Theron
Celebrity is a fickle thing. For example, there was an actress once named Nancy Davis. She starred in a number of films during the 1940's and '50's, but her acting career has become nothing more than a footnote in her life as Mrs. Ronald Reagan, the First Lady of the United States for eight years. Another woman from an earlier era went through a similar transformation. Her birth name was Wilma Winifred Wyatt, and she was born in 1911. She was only nine years old when she performed in the silent film Dad's Girl. In her teens, her studio compelled her to change her name to Dixie Lee, much more palatable to the movie-going public, and she continued to do well in film. She continued making movies as late as 1935, including Love in Bloom with George Burns and Gracie Allen, but she did something in 1930, at the age of eighteen, that would compelled her to retire just a few years later: she married the famous crooner Bing Crosby.
Bing has the distinction of selling more music than any other singer ever in the history of the world, at well over a billion records, tapes, compact discs, and digital downloads. Money was certainly not an issue for Bing and Dixie, and they had four sons together. Alas, his great success did not stop Bing from a dangerous drinking habit. Worse yet, Dixie often tried to keep up with her husband, which led her to a debilitating addiction to alcohol. Tragically, Dixie died when she was forty due in part to her addiction. We here at the Treasure Tour like to celebrate Dixie Lee the talented actress.
ANSWER: A) Kathryn Grant. The two were married for twenty years, until Bing's death in 1977.
