D) Jackie Gleason
As the American Treasure Tour blog returns to an exploration of our favorite actors from the silent film age, we cannot help but take a moment to honor someone who not only moved the hearts of everyone who saw his star-winning performance in Charlie Chaplin's 1921 masterpiece The Kid, but inspired one of the world's first franchise deals. Peanut butter, dolls, records, and numerous other items were created to honor the adorable Jackie Coogan. The talented boy was discovered by Chaplin when he was five, working on the vaudeville circuit. As Coogan's star rose, his personal fortunes fell. He was nineteen when his best friend was killed by kidnappers. Two years later, he was in the car his father was driving along with another friend and family friends when the car swerved off the road and toppled down a cliff. He was the only survivor. His mother then married his family's financial adviser and the two of them lived the high life, spending all the money Jackie made in the movies. His mother's defense was that, "No promises were made to give Jackie anything." He won the case, which led to the Coogan Law to protect the financial security of child actors ever after, but Jackie's money was all gone.
Jackie never stopped acting, but his roles as an adult never compared to those he had as a child. His best-remembered role was as Uncle Fester in the short-lived but highly popular television program The Addams Family during the 1960's. He also made a couple of appearances on the 1970's favorite The Brady Bunch. He was 69 years old when he passed away in 1989.
ANSWER: B) Jackie Cooper. He was nine years old when he was nominated for Best Actor for his performance in the 1931 film Skippy. He lost to Lionel Barrymore, most famous for his performance in It's a Wonderful Life as Mr. Potter.
