QUESTION: When she was 17 years old, Lauren Bacall attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts with what actor, who is currently 99 years old?
A) Gregory Peck
B) Kirk Douglas
C) Olivia deHavilland
D) Joan Fontaine
Betty Joan Perske was born to modest Jewish parents in the New York City borough of the Bronx. Family life was far from easy for Betty, and her parents divorced when she was five. She never saw her father again and legally changed her name to Bacall, after her mother's maiden name, the Romanian 'Bacal.' Wealthy family members sent her to private schools. Although she studied acting, she gained national attention as a model on magazine covers. Her alluring gaze was all it took, and she was soon cast in the Humphrey Bogart film To Have and To Have Not. Bacall later claimed she was so nervous filming that she pressed her quivering chin against her chest to control it, looking up at her co-star in what became a signature look for her. She would, of course, go on to marry Bogart, fifteen years her senior.
From her debut in the classic film noir, Bacall moved on to the less successful Confidential Agent. Some argue that her reputation never fully recovered from that critical misfire; however, there can be no doubt that she exonerated herself in future efforts. Bacall appeared regularly on film, television and the stage all of her life and created an impressive resume of performances spanning from the 1940's until shortly before her death in 2014 at the age of 89.
ANSWER: B) Kirk Douglas
