May - Monday, May 18, 2015

If you can remember all the way back to last Friday, we made Friday our topic.  Well, today, we thought about making Monday our subject, but decided to go in a little different direction.  We're wacky that way here at the American Treasure Tour blog.  Today, we're going to talk about May.  The fifth month of the year is very special to us here in the Northeastern United States because when May arrives, it means the snow is gone.  We don't have to think about the snow again until possibly next year.  Trees have leaves, flowers are blossoming, and it's getting warmer without being too hot (usually).  Really, the only negative is the pollen in the air, which can devastate the sinuses of the allergic.

May has thirty-one days in it, and it also has the shortest name for a month.  (We won't tell you how long it is, though.  We think you can figure that out without help.)  Many of the names in the calendar date back to the Roman days; however, May goes back to Ancient Greece and the goddess Maia, who was all about fertility.  Of course, there's another translation out there:  it could represent maiores, a Latin word that translates to 'elders,' to contrast with the Latin juniores, or 'juniors,' from which this translation contends June is named.  Who'd'a thunk it!
QUESTION:  In Ancient Greek mythology, who is Maia's dad?
A)  Zeus
B)  Atlas
C)  Cupid
D)  Daedelus

THAR SHE BLOWS!  If you have ever had the great pleasure to visit Mt. St. Helens in southern Washington State, you know how magnificent it is.  If you know the story of the mountain, you know it kinda blew its top.  In fact, that happened on this day 25 years ago!  It was obvious something was going on, as the mountain started swelling, but no one could have prepared enough for the devastation it caused, including the loss of 57 lives.  Visit it today, and its serene beauty contradicts the former chaos.

DOBIE.  Today we celebrate the 81st birthday of Dwayne Hickman, best known as Dobie Gillis in The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, a sitcom that aired from 1959 through 1963 starring Hickman and Bob Denver, Gilligan from his eponymous island a few years later.  Prior to being Dobie, Hickman was in The Bob Cummings Show (starring with Anne B. Davis of The Brady Bunch fame) and other tv shows, but he will always be Dobie.  Happy birthday Dobie--we mean, Dwayne!

ANSWER:  B)  Atlas.  We know.  That was an easy question.  (We had to look up the answer.)
