Great TV Dads - October 3, 2014

It’s a huge day for great TV dads! And they were all on CBS. On this day in 1954, Father Knows Best first aired, before making the move to NBC the following year. Robert Young played the wise and patient Jim Anderson, father to Betty, who he affectionately called “Princess,” Bud, and Kathy, a.k.a. “Kitten.” His perfect wife Margaret was played by Jane Wyman.

“Oh, Rob!” In 1961, The Dick Van Dyke Show premiered about a goofy comedy show writer named Robert Petrie, his beautiful wife Laura, played by Mary Tyler Moore, who singlehandedly brought Capri pants into style, and their son Richie. Rob’s comedic sidekicks included Sally (Rose Marie), Buddy (Morey Amsterdam), Mel Cooley (Richard Deacon), and his TV boss Alan Brady, played by show creator Carl Reiner.

In 1960, television audiences were introduced to the kind sheriff of a little town called Mayberry, North Carolina. The Andy Griffith Show told the story of widowed sheriff Andy Taylor and his young son, Opie, played by Ron Howard. The crazy cast of characters included Andy’s bumbling deputy, Barney Fife (Don Knotts), the naïve gas station attendant Gomer Pyle (Jim Nabors), and loveable Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier).

But wait! There’s more! Although technically not a TV dad, Robert Keeshan was loved by scores of children just the same. Better known as Captain Kangaroo, this children’s show debuted in 1955.
