QUESTION: Which of the following movies about an evil mummy starred Bruce Campbell as Elvis Presley?
A) Dawn of the Mummy
B) The Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy
C) Ancient Evil: Scream of the Mummy
D) Bubba Ho-Tep
Human beings have been fascinated with death and the afterlife since the beginning of recorded history (and likely much longer than that, we just have no way of knowing). Evidence exists from every populated continent (that would exclude Antarctica, although people do live there nowadays) that mummification has happened both intentionally, through the embalming process, and accidentally, due to natural accidents. Some cultures believed it was a way to ease the transition from this world to the next and ensured that important belongings were buried with the dead, including other people!
The 1923 discovery of the tomb of King Tutankhamen led to a worldwide fascination with mummies that led to movie franchises dedicated to stories of Egyptian pharaohs and mummies that return from beyond the grave for vengeance or, in the case of Universal's 1932 The Mummy starring Boris Karloff in the title role, love. Karloff plays the awakened mummy of Egyptian priest Imhotep intent on finding the reincarnation of his lost love Ankh-es-en-amon. His decade-long search leads him to Helen Grosvenor, played by lovely German-American actress Zita Johnann. Things don't go quite as Imhotep planned, but the film proved successful, and led to numerous sequels and remakes over the decades, including the popular franchise starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. You don't need to go to the movies to see the mummy, though. Bob Omrod included one in his 40 Horror Movies diorama - but this one is smiling and happy!
ANSWER: D) Bubba Ho-Tep. Released in 2002, the film has an aged Elvis living in a retirement community prepared to fight a mumm--oh, you have to see this one to believe it.
