Toy Box Movies, pt. 1 - Wednesday, April 22, 2015

I mentioned yesterday that a collection of movie posters was recently put on display in the Toy Box (don't forget to look up and behind you right when you walk in next time!).  Some of the movies advertised are very well known, some less so.  The American Treasure Tour blog will try to refrain from focusing on these for too many days in a row, but we do love our movies here!

First up is the 1996 Barbra Streisand vehicle, The Mirror Has Two Faces.  Part comedy, part drama, all Babs.  She not only starred in this film about the good and bad in marriage, but she directed and produced it as well.  She plays an ugly duckling English professor whose intellect is more appealing to Jeff Bridge's math professor than her body but, when he denies her certain intimacies, she transforms herself into a beauty, with unexpected results.  The film was not a blockbuster, but it did turn a profit.  Its reviews were mixed, mostly praising Lauren Bacall as Bab's mother and criticizes Babs' efforts to reveal her beauty and charm in an exaggerated pantomime.  See it and let us know what you think.
QUESTION:  Modest Rose Morgan (Barbra Streisand) is helped by her sister Claire (Mimi Rogers) to find a man (Jeff Bridges).  Who plays Claire's husband in the film?
A)  Daniel Craig
B)  Roger Moore
C)  Pierce Brosnan
D)  Timothy Dalton

HELPING OUR FRIEND, EARTH.  Most people are familiar with the fact that today is considered Earth Day, when issues surrounding the health and condition of the world are acknowledged, and awareness of environmental concerns are addressed.  It has been Earth Day since 1970. Recognition goes to John McConnell, a peace activist who attended a UNESCO Conference and received almost global recognition:  192 countries now celebrate Earth Day.  Of course, considering this is the only planet we have, maybe it should be changed to Earth Year.  But this is a good start.

GENTLE(MAN) ON MY MIND  Today, we celebrate the 79th birthday of the highly accomplished musician and former television host Glen Campbell.  During a career spanning over fifty years, Campbell has released over seventy albums.  He has also placed over eighty songs on the Billboard Country Charts, the Billboard Hot 100, and the Adult Contemporary Charts.  Truly one of America's most celebrated artists, we wish you many returns of the day!
