The American Treasure Tour is home to many wonderful surprises.  It may be a surprise to some that, alongside the classic cars and the one-of-a-kind automatic music machines on display is a handsome collection of dolls.  Many of them are on display in our Music Room, adding an elegance to the nickelodeons.

We would like to spend a little time telling you about some of the dolls on display, starting with members of the Annette Himstedt collection.  Annette comes from the German region of Saxony, and her family were refugees during her childhood in the years after World War II.  She despaired not having her own dolls as a child and, as an adult working in the insurance business, decided to create a doll for her own daughter when she triggered her own passion to create.  Fibi was presented in 2002 as a limited edition collector's item.  She was so popular that she sold out quickly.

QUESTION:  Annette Himstedt produced new dolls until 2011, when she closed down her factory.  In what country was her factory located?

A)  Germany
B)  Spain
C)  North Korea
D)  The United States of America

Answer Below

Alexander Graham Bell displayed his newfangled telephone at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.  Although it was a major innovation that would eventually change the way people communicated, that didn't happen overnight.  In fact, some regions of the country took a while to see the telephone's value.  On this day in 1894, the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company installed the first battery-operated telephone swtichboard to help connect people.  They set it up in Lexington, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston.

His parents named him Richard, giving his mother's maiden name, Milhous, as his middle name as well. The year was 1913, the town Yorba Linda, California.  Nixon's father built the home in which he was born himself, a house he ordered out of the Sears catalog.  Nixon's was a true rags-to-riches story, as he moved from very modest beginnings to great wealth and power.  Of course, he attained the highest position in the land when he was elected President of the United States in 1968, then became the first and (so far) only president to resign from the office in 1974.  We all have our ups and downs....
